The markets didn't react well to Google advertising figures

Google’s stock took a big hit today—still down 4 percent to $465—on comScore data suggesting that the click-through rate on its paid search ads is decelerating. As the chart above from Bear Stearns shows, the year-over-year growth of paid clicks on Google in the U.S. went from 37 percent in October to 0.3 percent in January. Since these are year-over-year numbers, seasonality is accounted for (there are more clicks in the months leading up to Christmas than after, but this January should not be flat with last January).

One explanation Wall Street analysts are putting out there today is that this could be an indicator that Google is not immune to the general economic slowdown. While a recession may be coming, that explanation is not convincing. Yahoo would have felt it as well, yet comScore reported a 15 percent year-over-year growth in paid clicks for Yahoo in January (to 242 million, compared to Google’s 532 million). Also, as Bill Tancer at Hitwise points out, traffic from Google to shopping sites is still above last year’s levels (evidence that paid clicks may actually be improving).

A more likely explanation is that Google is tightening the reins on clicks to combat click fraud and generate better clicks in general. Also the correlation between comScore’s click-through estimates and Google’s revenues has been highly inconsistent in the past. It definitely isn’t a one-to-one correlation. For instance, in the fourth quarter of 2007, comScore showed a 25 percent year-over-year paid click-through growth rate, yet Google’s actual U.S. revenues grew 46 percent. In the third quarter of last year, comScore showed a 48 percent growth rate for paid clicks, compared to an actual 58 percent growth in revenues. Sequential quarter-over-quarter comparisons are even more all over the map, according to calculations by JPMorgan.

Google’s ad market share slipped in the Fourth Quarter

A forthcoming report by IDC estimates that online advertising in the U.S. reached $25.5 billion in 2007, and $7.3 billion in the fourth quarter.

It also puts Google’s market share of Internet advertising in the U.S. during the fourth quarter of 2007 at 23.7 percent, down half a percentage point from the third quarter. That is Google’s first slip in market share in two years.

While Google’s overall U.S. sales (net of traffic acquisition costs that goes to pay partner sites) still went up 40 percent last quarter, it was not enough to keep its market share position compared to the overall industry.

The Growing Online Audio Advertising Revolution

Over 25,000 website owners are already hosting audio advertisements on their blogs, websites and social network profiles. Over 15 million websites are already hosting ads that are played to Internet listeners over 30 million times a day; this is likely to be a major force in Internet advertising.

Rivaling Google's Adsense and Adwords, NetAudioAds 'Adlets' are 5 second audio ads played the moment a visitor lands on a participating website. Adlets are now available to listeners over 30 million times a day on websites large and small, worldwide. Currently this new online advertising platform gives major advertisers the ability to reach out to Superbowl sized audiences.

NetAudioAds are five second 'radio station' style ads played automatically to people browsing the Web when they visit a participating website. These short advertisements, known as 'Adlets', allow approximately 15 spoken words or almost any highly recognizable jingle to be presented to a listener in the normal course of their browsing the Internet. They do not need to click on anything. They do not need to read anything. They just need to be on their computer with the sound turned on.

This is certainly a simple and effective form of advertising and we will see whether it takes hold and reaches traction.

AdReady raises $10 million

AdReady is a recently launched start-up that has just landed $10 million in investment from Bain Capital, Khosla Ventures and previous investor Madrona Venture Group for its display advertising service.

AdReady is an advertising technology company focused on making online display advertising accessible and effective for advertisers of all sizes.

Traditionally, online display advertising has not been a simple solution for businesses looking to grow their marketing efforts online. First, while it may be possible for almost anyone to write a two-line text ad, a single high-quality rich-media ad can cost thousands of dollars to design and build, the process can often take weeks, and there is no assurance that it will perform well.  Tracking results and planning broad campaigns takes some skill and planning that most people do not have.

AdReady is setting out to change all that. The company was founded in 2006 in Seattle with the goal to develop a better way to do display advertising that works for marketers at all levels of expertise and all budgets.

Are Facebook’s social ads illegal?

While Facebook and Mark Zuckerberg has promised a revolution in advertising there has some been some backlash and more importantly the social ads may be illegal.

According to the NY Times Facebook's ads may be illegal under a 100-year-old New York privacy law. The statute says that “any person whose name, portrait, picture, or voice is used within this state for advertising purposes or for the purposes of trade without the written consent first obtained” can sue for damages. Moreover, such a use is also a criminal misdemeanor.

According to William McGeveran, a professor at the University of Minnesota Law School who wrote about these laws in a blog post today, the law would apply to Facebook users anywhere if the ad were displayed in New York.

While the lawyers will no doubt find a way to resolve the legal issues, the bigger picture revolves around a backlash from the internet community. If any form of backlash picks up momentum Facebook may find its new ad platform a thorn in its side.

Internet advertising to triple from $16.9 billion in 2006 to $42 billion in 2011

eMarketer projects that US online advertising will more than double as a percentage of total media, rising from only a 6% share of total media in 2006, to slightly more than a 12% share in 2010.

In roughly the same period, online spending will nearly triple, rising from $16.9 billion in 2006 to $42 billion in 2011.

To put the obvious into figures, online advertising contributes more and more to the total ad spending universe every year.”

That share will be 7.4% this year, approach one in ten dollars next year, and will likely reach at least 13% by the end of 2011.

The average ad spend per Internet user is also growing. In fact, 2007 marks the first year that marketers will spend more than $100 to reach each person online. And, by 2011, advertisers will be spending nearly $200 per user.

Facebook Ads is based on trusted personal recommendations

Facebook Ads has finally launched and can be simplified into three parts:

1. Ads targeted at Facebook members using their profile data such as age, gender, relationship status, work history, and stated interests (Social Ads)

2. Ad widgets that advertisers can put on their own sites that allow Facebook members to become product endorsers, and spread that endorsement to all of their friends on Facebook through their personal feeds (Beacon).

3. Aggregated profile information that is exposed to Facebook advertisers that tells them what kind of people are getting their ads and who is clicking on them (Insight).

At the lanch press conference Mark Zuckerberg said “Once every hundred years media changes. the last hundred years have been defined by the mass media. The way to advertise was to get into the mass media and push out your content. That was the last hundred years. In the next hundred years information won’t be just pushed out to people, it will be shared among the millions of connections people have. Advertising will change. You will need to get into these connections.

“People influence people. Nothing influences people more than recommendations from a trusted friend. A trusted referral influences people more than the best broadcast message. A trusted referral is the Holy Grail of advertising."

MySpace to compete with Facebook with targeted ads

MySpace will today launch a new advertsiing service that allows it to sell advertisements targeted to the individual tastes and interests of its millions of users.

The advertising sales system is called "hyper targeting" because it uses the personal information which users input about themselves to tailor personalised online adverts.

This news will overshadow the recent news from Facebook who is also expected ot launch a similar ad network.

MySpace says click through rates on its hyper-targeted advertisements are 300 per cent greater than for other advertisements on its site.

More than 50 advertisers have signed up to the MySpace scheme, including Procter & Gamble, Microsoft, Ford and Toyota.

Online advertising i presentoy experiencing a big boom in term sof new startups and as a sustainable business for many publishers.

Facebook to launch ad network to rival Google Adwords

Mark Zuckerberg will be announcing the launch of Facebook’s new advertising system on November 6th.

This news comes days after Facebook released an unannounced upgrade to their Flyers system, enabling users to view demographic data within the site. Interestingly, Facebook recently filed a trademark for “SocialAds” just last month.

It appears as though this is finally taking place next month. Facebook is also expected to launch an advanced analytics package and e-commerce features for the Facebook platform.

Imagine if Facebook, who now has access to over 50 million users’ personal information could target ads based on those profiles anywhere on the web.

Facebook will be leveraging the cookies installed in users’ browsers after logging into Facebook in order to target them across the web. In the instance that the user doesn’t have one of the Facebook cookies installed, ads similar to those of what Google currently provides will be displayed.

This may well explain why Microsoft has invested $240 million in Facebook.  Thanks to their advertising partnership, Microsoft will now be able to provide targeted ads not only based on demographic data (location, age, gender, etc), but they will also know that the person visiting your site is interested in skiing and guitar.

All of this information will allow Facbook to make considerably more money that the standard Adwords.

Google may well have some serious competition.

MochiAds - advertising network for game developers

MochiAds is a no-hassle way for Flash game developers to make money from every play.

The developers simply add one line of code to their game, MochiAds then approves the game for the advertisers.

MochiAds gives the developer a great deal of control with the facility to turn ads off at any time, show their own ad, or even change settings on a per domain basis.

MochiAds works games made with Flash 6 through 9+

Online flash games continue to grow in popularity and MochiAds is well placed to become the dominant ad network for game developers.
